Meaning: Buffalo thorn tree, Family - ziziphus.

A very spiritual tree in many Southern African cultures. It is believed that the branch of a Buffalo thorn tree will pick up and hold the spirit of a dead family member. The Zulu people believe that the thorns will wipe out a dead persons spirit and bury it. Mokgalo (buffalo thorn tree) is believed to be home to their ancestors.
The tree also bears an edible fruit resembling a date. It is used to brew beer and date wine. Various parts of the tree are used widely as a natural medicine to treat diarrhoea, dysentery, coughs, chest problems and other ailments.
